Playoffs Underway at MEVZA Senior Championship in Kranj


The MEVZA Senior Beach Volleyball Championship in Kranj, Slovenia, has reached its most exciting phase. After the pool play stage was completed yesterday, today’s schedule is packed with thrilling knockout matches in both the men’s and women’s tournaments.

Round of 12 matches started early this morning, featuring national pairs from across Middle Europe.

In the men’s draw, Semerad/Stocek (CZE) opened the day with a straight-set win over their compatriots Mrkous/Pihera (CZE), 2:0 (18, 15). The Austrian duo Nedetzky/Holzinger faced Niemeier/Hajos from Hungary, while three Slovenian teams – Pokersnik/Robida, Renko/Prevorcnik, and Kosanc/Mugerli – took on each other or Hungarian pairs in key matchups to determine who moves on to the quarterfinals.

The women’s Round of 12 included some tight national duels. Slovakia’s Tokosova/Terenova went up against Hungary’s Honti-Majoros/Posztos-Szabo, while Slovenia’s Kalar/Lovsin faced Lorenzova/Novotna (CZE). Other clashes featured teams Kun/Villám (HUN) vs Frommova/Marcelova (CZE), and Brinkova/Rudicka (CZE) vs Matasova/Palkovicova (SVK).

The Quarterfinals begin this afternoon, where top-seeded teams join the action.

In the men’s bracket, Dumek/Westphal (CZE) await after their direct qualification, as do Melmuka/Jezzk (CZE), Kunert/Petutschnig (AUT), and Oliva/Kurka (CZE), each preparing to face Round of 12 winners.

On the women’s side, Kubickova/Pluharova (CZE), Kleiblova/Dunárová (CZE), Kotnik/Marolt (SLO), and Javornik/Lovsin (T. SLO) are all set to fight for a spot in the semifinals.

The final stage of the championship will take place tomorrow, July 26, with both semifinals and medal matches scheduled.
