The very first edition of the MEVZA Senior Championship started on Tuesday, with the women’s tournament taking place in Maribor, Slovenia, and the men’s competition hosted in Fonyód, Hungary.
The new national team competition brings together teams from across the MEVZA region in a round-robin format, with all teams playing each other until Sunday.
In the women’s tournament, Hungary opened the competition with a solid 3-0 win over Cyprus (25-16, 25-16, 25-14). Croatia also started successfully later in the day, beating Austria in straight sets (25-19, 25-23, 25-18).
The men’s matches brought plenty of drama on day one. Austria came back to defeat Hungary in five sets (20-25, 25-22, 25-18, 13-25, 15-7), while Cyprus edged Croatia after a tense battle that ended in a tie-break (20-25, 25-22, 17-25, 28-26, 15-11).
