On Saturday night, SK Zadruga AICH/DOB celebrated a hard-fought 3-2 (25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 18-25, 15-12) home win over their national rivals UVC Holding GRAZ in the men’s MEVZA League.
As a result, the former competition winners have cemented their third place in the current standing now on 14 points (5-3 win-loss record) behind the Slovenian teams ACH VOLLEY Ljubljana and OK Merkur MARIBOR. Austria’s reigning national champions, on the other hand, are still sitting in eighth place. UVC Holding GRAZ have collected five points in their ten matches (1-9) they have contested so far. Konrad Formela and Marino Marelic split the best scorer’s honours for SK Zadruga AICH/DOB with 19 points each, while Sergej Drobnic (25) and Johannes Kratz (14) were the most prolific players for the away side.
Martin Micheu, sports director SK Zadruga AICH/DOB: “We had the match in our hands, but at the beginning of the third set our service player Blazej Podlesny got injured and we lost control. Even though we were tired from the two CEV Cup matches at Zenit Kazan on Wednesday and Thursday, this should not happen to us. It’s inexplicable and annoying. We could have lost the match, because anything can happen in a tie-break.”
The men’s MEVZA League is going to continue on Tuesday, when fourth-placed OK Calcit KAMNIK (SLO) will be hosting sixth-placed Union Raiffeisen WALDVIERTEL (AUT).
