Austria win five-set drama as Hungary and Croatia dominate in straight sets

Day three of the MEVZA Senior Championship brought more important wins in both Maribor and Fonyód, as teams moved one step closer to the final standings ahead of the last competition day on Sunday.

In the women’s tournament in Maribor, Austria opened the day with a 3-1 victory over Cyprus. After Cyprus took the first set 25-23, Austria reacted well and gradually took control of the match, winning the next three sets 25-22, 25-19, and 25-20.

Later in the evening, Hungary recorded a convincing 3-0 win over Luxembourg. The Hungarian side dominated from the start and closed the match in straight sets, 25-14, 25-16, and 25-21.

The men’s tournament in Fonyód once again delivered the most dramatic match of the day. Austria and Cyprus battled through five sets before Austria eventually secured a 3-2 victory. Cyprus opened the match with a 25-23 set win, but Austria responded strongly by taking the next two sets 25-23 and 25-19. Cyprus forced a tie-break after winning the fourth set 25-23, but Austria stayed composed in the decider and won the match 15-10.

Croatia recorded its first win in the tournament, defeating Luxembourg 3-0. Although Luxembourg pushed Croatia in the opening set, which ended 26-24, Croatia dominated the remainder of the match and comfortably took the next two sets 25-14 and 25-14.

The MEVZA Senior Championship continues on Saturday with more matches in both Maribor and Fonyód.
