Vasas Óbuda BUDAPEST claim away win in women’s MEVZA League opener

On Wednesday evening, Vasas Óbuda BUDAPEST secured three points in the season opener of the women’s MEVZA League 2021-2022. The Hungarian team defeated hosts VB NÖ Sokol/Post in four sets (21-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-19). Vasas Óbuda BUDAPEST’s Kata Török was the most prolific scorer on 17 points, while Aida Mehi? managed to put 15 to her name for the home side.

“Of course, we are disappointed, but there are also positive things that we can take out of this game. We play against such high-profile teams to gain more experience”, SOKOL/POST head coach Zuzana Pecha-Tlstovicova said.

In the men’s competition, Union Raiffeisen WALDVIERTEL needed 80 minutes only to celebrate a clean sweep (25-22, 25-23, 25-22) of VKP BRATISLAVA on home soil. With this victory, the “Nordmänner” have increased their tally to five points from two matches. Five players split the best scorer’s honours for the winning team with eight points each, while VKP BRATISLAVA’s Adrián Van?o recorded 14 points.

“I am very satisfied with the performance of my team. The players that came off the bench helped us a lot today,” URW’s head coach Zdenek Smejkal explained.

Later in the evening, OK Merkur MARIBOR emerged victorious from their clash with TJ Spartak MYJAVA. Slovenia’s national champions gained a fully deserved 3-1 (25-12, 23-25, 25-12, 25-21) home win to top the current charts on six points. Ahmed Ikhbayri was the player of the match after an impressive performance that saw him finishing on a total of 23 points. His teammate Roland Gergye was the only one to keep close with 21 points. Matus Konc hammered 16 for the away side.

The MEVZA Leagues are going to resume with four encounters next weekend. Live streaming of all matches is available for fans to follow the competition as closely as possible.
